Colin-Friendly Potato Salad.

Don't like onions or celery?  Replace them with cucumber!

Colin-Friendly Potato Salad

3/4 c    light mayo
1 tsp    sugar
1/2tsp  celery seed
1 tsp    vinegar
1 tsp    yellow mustard
3/4tsp  salt
1/4tsp  smoked paprika

4     red potatoes
5     eggs
1/2  cuke, finely chopped

Notes
-Like a kick?  Colin does!  Add 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper.
-Use more cuke if you like more crunch.
-Use whatever vinegar you have on hand.  I used rice vinegar.

Boil the potatoes and eggs, slice into nice big chunky bites, dice up your 1/2 cucumber, toss them in a bowl, mix the sauce and stir in, a little at a time, to your liking.  Chill for an hour.  So easy.  Sooo good.

Slap it on a bun, or serve with some pan fried tilapia.  Add crushed up bacon for a full meal.

Spring Semester 2011.

And so it begins.

Just two more semesters left and then I'm... in need of a job.

Illustrations for Sportswear.  They've been mailed to our critic in New York, and she'll select the one we'll be making this semester in class.  The scanner ate my colors; this is as close as I could get them to what they actually look like.

Going home for Christmas.  Dreaming of a white one.

Limelight.

My dress final is done, after many a long sleepless night of suffering.

I don't have photos of it finished, because it has been chosen for the showcase in my studio building.

(far left)

These five dresses, along with five others from the junior dresses class, will be put on display in VCU's Anderson Gallery in April.  I'm gonna be in a gallery!

Blackberries. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.

For a recyclable fashion show, I thought I'd try to dye the organic cotton I had left over from an organic show with a dye bath of nothing but pureed beets and blackberries and a little hot water.

First I mixed up three beets and a box of blackberries in a food processor and squeezed that concoction through a foot of nylon tights.

It looks like I killed someone.

Dexter Jess.

It dried a little bit bluer than this.  Most of the pigment washed out, but it still left a nice pastel shade of something between pink and periwinkle.
I'm making a corset top out of cardboard coffee sleeves to go with it.

Pictures of the garment soon.

InLight.

Here they are.  Thank you to Colin Matthews for the photos and Gracie Draper for modeling.

At the show...

We didn't win.  In fact, none of the fashion design girls did.  The winners were the crazy, over-the-top, taped together "audience faves".  Clearly this wasn't a fashion show, as I had hoped for.  It was a 'throw as many lights onto a body as you can' show.  I was disappointed with the low caliber of the whole event, but I'm proud as hell of what I created, and I appreciate the love and support of the people who understand what I do.

Jess, out.

Tailor Tack Me Down.

I'm all over the place these days.

Here's my front jacket pieces, thread traced and ready to put together, along with an idea for a zipper necklace, and a sweater inspired by The Pillars of the Earth.  I love period clothes.

I went to the bookstore and finally got myself a Stitch 'N Bitch.  I'm dying to learn how to knit.  Lord get me to a craft store, stat.  I think I'll have pumpkin pie for dinner.

Jacket pockets, shots from Wearable Art and a dress made out of organic cotton bedsheets coming soon.

Somewhere That's Green.

I want to go to a place where nothing in sight has been effected by mankind.  I want to smell, and listen.

I need to go to a place where I can remember what it means to be a living thing.

I need to reconnect with the earth that I came from.

I need to rediscover what is important.

All that I see is concrete.

I need

air.

Fit For A Slutty Princess.

A very short, very tight princess seam dress sample.

I've been wanting to set up an Etsy account, and I'm thinking I want to order either damask or printed (cheaper) woven labels for my stuff.  There's a website that does just this, and you send in an image of your label design and the size and quantity you want, and they give you an estimate.  I went to alter my little "snip.shop" logo, and ALL OF THOSE FILES ARE GONE.  Just... gone.  I don't understand why my external keeps eating not only files, but entire folders.  The blog banner, the shop banner, the scissor image, everything.  That's gonna set me back at least a day, remaking those.

Can't worry about that now, though.

I have so many things to make in the next couple weeks, oh my gods.

First Recipe! Apple Pumpkin Soup.

I did it!  I've concocted my first ever completely original recipe!  Wooo!

I used vegetable broth, so this dish is also vegetarian for you freaks out there that don't eat meat.

Warning: Do not eat this soup before you have somewhere to be.  It's a heavy one.  Side affects include increased sense of peace in the world, a warm fuzzy holiday feeling and a need to snuggle.

Jess' Apple Pumpkin Soup
 Serves 6 moderately hungry people
or 4 starving people.

2 tbsp      butter
1/2 tsp     powdered ginger (more for a kick)
1 tsp        nutmeg
1 tsp        cinnamon, more for apples
1              15 oz Libby's canned pumpkin
1              large apple, peeled and chopped
1/4 cup    pecan pieces (more for garnish if desired)
2 cups     veggie broth
1/2 cup   water
1/2 cup   half and half
1/2 cup   cream cheese

Get out your go-to soup pot and melt 2 tbsp of butter (I know it's a lot, trust me) on medium heat.  Get it nice and hot and bubbly.  Peel your apple, coarsely chop it and add it to the butter.  Sprinkle a little palmful of cinnamon over the apples, give it a good stir and cover.  While that is simmering, coarsely chop 1/4 cup pecans and stir them in.  Let the apples get soft and brown, and when the butter is almost completely absorbed, add your 1/2 cup water and replace the lid.  Turn the stove up a little to a medium high heat and wait for the water to boil off.

When the water is gone, remove the pot from the heat, turn the stove back down to medium heat, and transfer the apple goodness to a food processor.  Add your broth to the empty pot and let that heat up.  Process the apple mixture, add a splash of water, then process some more.  At this point it should smell like your most beautiful childhood memory.

Add the apple mixture back into the broth and  WISK well.  Continue to add the pumpkin, half and half, cream cheese, and spices.  MAKE SURE YOU WISK CONTINUOUSLY WHILE ADDING INGREDIENTS.  It'll get horribly chunky if you don't.  Wisk in a 1/2 cup of water if you like runnier soup.

Ladle the soup into serving bowls through a strainer.
Garnish with a nice little mountain of rough chopped pecans and an enormous spoon to eat it with.

I have a feeling this soup would be really great as a side dish with some gorgeous pork chops.
Tip: for a stronger apple flavor, boil the apples with apple juice instead of water.

I can't wait to get started on my hobbit costume.

Happy Haunting.

Art Fart.

I love the graphics on these Chinese tea bags.  I think I might make a necklace out of them.

I got the conformation email last night that I got into Wearable Art.  Totally excited.  The email was all, "our esteemed panel chose from a large number of excellent proposals, blah dee blah", and I'm thinking, yeah right I just drew a lampshade hat.  In about ten minutes.  No really, this is how dumb my submission is.
Like, honestly.  But whatever, I'm proud of myself and I can't wait.

Also, I'm employed.  I'm the new dress department saleswoman and stylist at Short Pump Nordstrom.  I go in for job training Monday and Friday, and am assuming I start the following week.

I also may or may not pledge Kappa Pi (art frat) this year, which I may or may not be qualified for (GPA, talent and such) and may or may not have time for (I have a lot of shit to do).  I don't know.

I don't know why I'm so goddamned ambitious this semester.  It's very unlike me.

I'm dying to go photo-ing, now that it's finally acting like fall and the weather is spectacular.  I think it's due time for a trip to the cemetery.

Sweater weather!

Seven Year Itch Isn't A Very Good Movie.

First outfit WIP for Jessdoll!
(This is incredibly vain, isn't it?)

Oh my God I don't know how to shade.

Marijess Montimroe.  I know, clever.

Blonde clearly isn't my color.

Something happened to my PSD file for the original Jessdoll.  It's, well, gone.  I'm mildly horrified.  It's an issue because I had to erase a portion of the lines of my face in order to not make the wig layer look really stupid.  No one wants brown hair sticking out of their Marilyn wig.  How embarrassing.  At least I still have the Illustrator file of the line art, but I'm gonna have to color... me... all over again.

I wish life worked like this.  Crawl out of bed, select a makeup and clothing layer, hide your gross morning layer and go.

ILY, Norma Jeane Baker.
